Do you want to advance?

Look within and get to your goal.

Whenever I think about goals, the first thing that pops into my head is a passage from Lewis Carroll’s beloved Alice in Wonderland:

Alice: “Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”

Cheshire Cat: “That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.”

Alice: “I don’t much care where..."

Cheshire Cat: “Then it doesn’t matter which way you go.”

Alice: “...so long as I get somewhere.”

Cheshire Cat: “Oh, you’re sure to do that, if only you walk long enough.”

Much like Alice, I often encounter people who keep moving, rushing, and striving without really knowing where they’re headed. What a needless drain of energy, resources, and precious time—time that is already limited.

We measure life in achievements and successes, rarely pausing to ask ourselves: What do I truly want to do? What is worth living for - or even more profoundly, what would I be willing to die for? These are the questions that hit at the very core of our existence, reminding us of the personal values that fuel our goals and motivation. Take a moment to ask yourself: what truly matters to you? What do you do that makes time stand still, when you are fully present and inspired, completely absorbed in the joy of the here and now?

Once you’ve identified that area, activity, or profession, know that this is where your goals should live. It’s the space where discipline, dedication, and consistency take root. Here, our desires transform into meaningful goals - the big, inspiring ones worth investing our time, energy, and sacrifice. Goals like these are truly yours, connected to your dreams and authentic self. For them, we are ready to go all in. And in that moment, there is no question of success; we know we are on the only path that truly matters and fulfills us.

When I work with people to define their goals and life vision, there is often initial resistance. They know clearly what they don’t want, but the vision of what they do want is obscured - lost in a fog of others’ expectations, those familiar phrases starting with “You should…” or “It’s best for you to…” Throughout our upbringing, we are surrounded by these messages, and I often meet people who work tirelessly, day after day, pursuing someone else’s dreams. They lack courage for their own, or clarity, or simply haven’t come to them yet.

The only way to truly grow, advance, and feel fulfilled is to discover what you genuinely want to do, where you want to succeed, and how you wish to be remembered. When your vision finally clears, and the horizon reveals the destination you want to reach, well-defined goals with deadlines and concrete action plans will guide you there. If you roll up your sleeves and, as athletes say, “put your heart on the field”.
