What is PCM?
(Process Communication Model®)
Many communication methodologies teach us how to communicate with different people. But only one methodology teaches us who the people we communicate with truly are.
The Process Communication Model (PCM) is a model that reveals the deep structure of personality. It helps us understand communication needs, their roots, and how to meet them. It also shows us how these needs affect our relationships—both at work and in our personal lives—and how to reduce the impact of our own negative reactions when those needs go unmet.
PCM is more than just a theory – it’s a practical tool for improving all aspects of your communication.
PCM identifies six personality types that exist within each of us, each with its own characteristics, strengths, and communication styles. Whether you're a Thinker, Harmoniser, Persister, Promoter, Imaginer, or Rebel, PCM helps you decode what drives you—and others.
How can you adjust your communication style to effortlessly connect with people from all walks of life? With PCM, it's simple – imagine knowing a secret language that speaks directly to someone's personality, ensuring your message always lands the right way.
PCM goes beyond decoding communication – it’s a transformative journey of self-discovery.
Understanding your own „personality structure" allows you to truly get to know yourself and your needs, recognize what causes you stress, and learn how to prevent those stress responses.
You will gain a deep understanding of your strengths, key advantages, core needs, and personal motivators.
You'll also understand why you may experience conflict with some people and not with others—and how to resolve any conflict in a constructive way.
PCM enables you to gain a genuine understanding of the mechanisms behind people's behaviour in the workplace. By adopting the Process Communication Model, you will develop your capacity for adaptive communication and gain a deeper appreciation of the complexity of human behaviour. In practical terms, PCM allows you to anticipate how those around you are likely to behave—by providing insight into the underlying structure of personality, stress behaviour patterns, and the communication needs of all six personality types. This equips you to build healthy and positive interpersonal relationships.
What is the origin of PCM?
PCM was developed by American clinical psychologist Dr Taibi Kahler. As a researcher in transactional analysis, he discovered stress behaviour patterns that all people exhibit and identified the specific conditions individuals need in order to thrive.
For this discovery, Dr Kahler was awarded the Eric Berne Memorial Scientific Award by the International Transactional Analysis Association—founded by Eric Berne himself, the creator of transactional analysis.
From Space to Global Recognition
PCM was first applied in the late 1970s, when Dr Kahler used the remarkable insights from his personality research to support NASA. The agency’s chief psychiatrist invited him to assist in selecting the most suitable astronauts for upcoming missions—and the results proved highly successful.
From that point onward, the model has remained true to its founding vision: don’t put people in boxes—recognise, celebrate, and make the most of our differences.Today, PCM is used by renowned coaches, psychologists, and executives from Fortune 500 companies. Over 1.6 million people worldwide have experienced the benefits of the PCM.
